      Start your exploration tour in the island’s capital Saint-Denis - can you feel the relaxed vibe? Urban style meets colorful markets and colonial buildings. Stroll along the Rue de Paris, which begins with the Victory Column and is lined with magnificent Creole villas. Do you prefer jungle fever to city vibes? Then make your way towards Cirque de Salazie, a basin that is hard to beat for lush greenery! The slopes of the gorge rise up to your right and left, bursting with vegetation. And suddenly - rushing waterfalls that plunge into the depths right in front of you. One of the most beautiful is definitely the Voile de la Mariée. You’ll discover banana plantations and bamboo forests everywhere and in the middle of it all lies the village of Hell-Bourg. Colorful houses nestle between hills and palm trees - the smell of sweet crêpes lures you into the pedestrian zone.

      Let’s hit the road! Today you drive down the east coast and into the interior. If you’ve woken up early from all the excitement, it’s worth taking a short detour to the Takamaka waterfalls. The rushing masses of water cascading through the deep green jungle are the perfect photo motif! From the solitude of nature, we head to the village of La Plaine-des-Palmistes. A morning market is held there every weekend. Take the opportunity to mingle with the locals before setting off on the next stage. On the Col de Bellevue mountain pass, you wind your way along the slopes at an altitude of 1,606 meters and soak up the unique natural scenery before you: Bizarre peaks vie to be the tallest, while on the other side a flat plain stretches all the way to the coast - a rarity on La Réunion! From light green meadows that merge into dark green forests, your gaze wanders to the Plaine des Cafres plateau. No wonder, as this is where you can marvel at the highest peak in the Indian Ocean - the Piton des Neiges!

From here, leave your rental car and continue on foot towards Cascade Grand Galet - always following the sound of the water. The lush green landscape thins out to reveal a breathtaking view of thundering waterfalls gushing over black rock and pouring into a turquoise natural pool. You take a dip in the refreshing spring - and it feels so good! Would you like a pool right by the sea? Then take the rental car back to St. Joseph and on to the Bassin de Manapany. Natural stones and rocks have created a pool against the backdrop of the deep blue Indian Ocean. While you relax in the calm waters of the pool, the surf rages behind you and makes the spray splash - an amazing feeling! Exhausted but happy, you get back into the car and drive towards Saint-Pierre.

      Hot, hotter, Piton de la Fournaise! The seething volcano is an absolute highlight of the island that you absolutely must not miss. You are just rounding the last bend of the Route du Volcan when the huge massif suddenly looms in the distance. As if spellbound, you observe the ash-covered La Plaine des Sables plateau, which heralds the seismic activity of the stone colossus in front of you. Now your hiking adventure on the island’s last active volcano can begin! First, you tackle the smaller crater Formica Leo - the mini version of what awaits you further up. You make the energetic ascent to the main crater Dolomieu and are richly rewarded at the top: the view is unique! On one side, the dark basalt crater plunges into the depths, while on the other, the sea and sky meet on the horizon. And you? You feel like the king of the world! At an altitude of 2,632 meters, the clouds even float below you. They contrast with the blue panorama like cotton candy! On the way back, pay particular attention to the traces that lava flows have left behind in the rock in recent years.
