      As your flight nears Bhutan you will have some great views of the Himalayas including the sacred Mt. Jomolhari (7326m) and Jichu Drake (6662m). From the airport, we will be taken to our hotels followed by a visit to Rinpung Dzong, built-in 1646 and now home to the district Monastic Body and government administrative offices of Paro Dzongkhag. We will then head to Kyichu Lhakhang, the oldest temple in the country and to Ta Dzong (fort) that was once a lookout tower but is now the National Museum. The museum has a wide variety of ancient paintings, weaponry, traditional costumes, and handicrafts.

      This morning we trek for around 2 hours to Taktsang (Tigerโ€™s Nest) Monastery, Bhutanโ€™s most famous monastery. Guru Rinpoche (Buddhist sage) is said to have flown on the back of a tigress to meditate in a cave where Taktsang Monastery is now situated. We will stop for a lunch break at a cafรฉ halfway up the mountain. The monastery is situated on the edge of a steep cliff about 900 meters above Paro Valley. After having explored the monastery we head back down to the valley floor. We will stay overnight in Paro.

      Today the trail begins at Drukgyel Dzong at 2,580 meters on a wide downhill trail. We then climb slowly up through terraced farms growing millet. We then come to some apple orchards and forests. The valley then widens before arriving at the army post of Gunitsawa (2,810m). This is the last stop village before the border with Tibet. Just above Shana (2,870m), we come to a good overnight campsite in the fields that are surrounded by trees.

      The trail this morning follows the Pa Chhu (Paro River) on an undulating trail through pine, oak and spruce forests. After crossing the bridge we will stop for a lunch break by the side of the river. We then continue to follow the river and up through rhododendron forests until coming to another bridge and our campsite at 3,750 meters.

      This morning the trail heads uphill until we reach the army camp. We then follow the river above the tree line from where we have some amazing views of the surrounding peaks. We will stop for lunch at a yak herderโ€™s camp. A little further up the valley we arrive at our campsite at Jangothang (4,040m) from where we have superb views of Mt. Chomolhari and Jichu Drake.

      Today is spent acclimatizing. In order to better acclimatize it is recommended that you stay active, so this morning we will trek for 4 hours to the north of our camp from where we have some extraordinary views of Jichu Drake Peak. This trek will definitely help us to acclimatize. On the trail, we may be lucky enough to see yak grazing and blue sheep.

      Today we follow the stream and then cross the bridge before ascending up to the ridge from where we again have some awesome views of Chomolhari, Jichu Drake, and Tshering Gang from the top of the ridge. From here we walk toward the valley before having to climb to Ngye La pass (4,830m/15,970ft). After we cross the pass it is a steady descent to the Lingzhi campsite (4,000m) from where we have views of Lingzhi Dzong.

      This morning we head to a small white chorten on a ridge above the camp before heading south up the deep Mo Chhu Valley. The trail heads up the mostly barren valley above Mo Chhu. We then cross the river and head to Yeli La Pass (4,820m/15,810ft) from where we can see Mt. Chomolhari, Gangchen Ta, Tshering Gang and Masang Gang. We then head downstream until we arrive at our camp for the night at Shodu (4,100m).

  • Day 9 Day 9: Shodu To Barshong (3,600M/11,810Ft) Duration 6 - 7 Hours.

      This morning we head out on the trail that follows the Thimphu River as we head down through rhododendron, juniper and other alpine forests. On the trail we have some awesome views of the cliff faces and waterfalls. We will stop for lunch by the river and then continue slowly ascending to the ruins of Barshong Dzong. Tonight we will camp at an altitude of 3,600 meters.

      The trail today heads down through dense rhododendron, birch and conifer forests on a steep trail to the Thimphu Chhu River. The trail then crosses a steep cliff to Dolam Kencho where we will set up camp in a pasture at an altitude of 3,600 meters.

  • Day 11 Day 11: Dolam Kencho To Dodena To Thimphu (2,350M /7,710Ft) Duration 3 - 4 Hours.

      This morning is our last day on the trail as we head from Dolam Kencho to Dodena before driving to Thimphu. The trail today initially heads up around 500 meters before descending about 930 meters. The undulating trail passes through forests and down through a small pass. We continue heading south until we arrive at Dodena and then drive to Thimphu. This evening we may wander around the streets of Thimphu and observe the local lifestyle in this amazing country.

      Today we leave this Himalayan kingdom and her happy smiling people. Druk Air usually departs in the morning to avoid unfavorable weather conditions.
