  • Day 3 Day 3: 24/06/2022 โ€œInti Raymiโ€ The Sun Festival
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 3: 24/06/2022 โ€œInti Raymiโ€ The Sun Festival

At the time of the Incas, Inti Raymi was, according to Garcilaso de la Vega, the most important of the four festivals held in Cusco, capital of the empire. It indicated the beginning of the year as well as the mythical origin of the Inca and lasted 9 days during which dances and sacrifices took place. The last Inti Raymi in the presence of the Inca emperor was held in 1535. It was later banned in 1572 by Viceroy Francisco de Toledo being considered a pagan ceremony contrary to Catholic faith, but a however, continued to be celebrated clandestinely. In 1944, a historical reconstruction of the Inti Raymi was organized on the basis of the chronicles of Garcilaso de la Vega, which referred only to the religious aspects of the ceremony. Since that date, the annual ceremony is once again a public event and the great tourist attraction in the city of Cusco. Today, the Inti Raymi is of course of a different character. The show is aimed at both tourists and Cusco residents, for whom it represents a point of reference for their local awareness and cultural affiliation. For these reasons it attracts enthusiasm and massive participation. The performance, in which thousands of people take part, begins opposite the Koricancha, where the "Inca" invokes the Sun. Spectators, meanwhile, wait on the Sacsayhuamรกn esplanade, to which the procession immediately moves. The "Inca" is then carried on its litter by groups which represent the inhabitants of the four nations. We then proceed to the โ€œsacrificeโ€ of an alpaca and the โ€œIncaโ€ invokes his father the Sun. The screenplay for the performance is written in Quechua by Faustino Espinoza Navarrese, who for many years represented the Inca. The participants take their role very seriously and the show is a riot of color, music and dances. With more than sixty years of existence, the new Inti Raymi is now an integral part of Cusco life. A representation of this ceremony takes place every year from the Qoricancha, then the Main Square and finally the fortress of Sacsayhuaman (for the representation of Sacsayhuaman a paid entry is payable at your expense, to be reserved at the time of registration).
