Day 2: The Pyramids Of Sakkara And Giza

In the morning, you will immerse yourself in the fascinating atmosphere of the Sakkara necropolis. The Djoser Pyramid, Egyptโ€™s second oldest surviving monumental building made of hewn stone, takes center stage. Originally planned to be 8 meters high, the project developed into a six-tiered pyramid with an imposing height of 62 meters. The artistic reliefs and inscriptions of the tomb immediately cast a spell over you. Each inscription tells stories of times past and reveals the secrets of ancient Egypt. In the afternoon, the excursion continues to the fascinating pyramid field of Giza. The pyramid plateau of Giza has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979 and is also the only remaining wonder of the ancient world. In addition to the three great pyramids of Cheops, Chephren and Mykerinos, mortuary temples, several secondary pyramids and numerous smaller tombs for officials were also built here. Another highlight is the world-famous Sphinx, a mixture of man and lion, which guards the royal tombs. These marvels were created at the height of the Old Kingdom, around 4,500 years ago. By the way, how do you say "the Sphinx" or "the Sphinx"? Let the tour guide explain it to you.

  • Day 4 Day 4: Aswan
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 4: Aswan

In the morning, you will explore the impressive Temple of Isis on the picturesque island of Philae. This sacred place has been visited by pilgrims and warriors since the ancient Egyptian era. The temple complex, which was built during the magnificent Ptolemaic period, bears witness to the deep spiritual connection of this time with the goddess Isis. Due to the construction of the Aswan Dam, the water level of the Nile rose and the temple was engulfed by the floods for six months of the year. This situation revealed a unique sight as the clear river water unveiled the submerged courtyards and columns of the temple. In the late 1970s, when Philae Island was in danger of being permanently flooded, a remarkable rescue operation was carried out. The temple was carefully dismantled stone by stone and relocated to the nearby island of Agilkia, where it sits enthroned above the water level. In the afternoon, the river island of Elephantine awaits you, where you can learn more about Nubian culture during a visit to the museum, a village walk and a tour of an archaeological site. You can also take the opportunity to talk to the locals in a Nubian village or ask your tour guide for tips on other activities.

  • Day 5 Day 5: Abu Simbel And Kom Ombo
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 5: Abu Simbel And Kom Ombo

The day starts early today. Our destination is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the rock temple of Abu Simbel. After the pyramids and the Sphinx, Abu Simbel is the most famous and important site from the pharaonic era. The journey to the temple complex will be worth it, because you will be amazed. These impressive works of art tell the story of the life of Pharaoh Ramses II and his wife Nefertari. The temple was built in the 13th century BC. After the glorious period of the ancient Egyptian New Kingdom, it initially fell into oblivion and was eventually buried under desert sand. Around 3000 years later, the complex was literally dug out of the ground and rebuilt. As if that wasnโ€™t enough, in the 1960s it had to be rescued from the rising water level of Lake Nasser and moved to a plateau where you can now admire it. In order to better and more efficiently irrigate the land, it was decided to build a reservoir near Aswan. On the way back, your bus stops at the large Aswan Dam, a structure celebrated by the Egyptians as a modern wonder of the world. The project is not without controversy, as 90,000 Nubians had to be resettled due to the damming of Lake Nasser. In addition, many historical relics were literally doomed to destruction. You cruise leisurely downstream until you reach Kom Ombo. As if made for a photo, the double temple rises several meters above the river level. The Nile also makes a bend at this point, making the building stand out particularly well. Double temple? Thatโ€™s right, because this complex is dedicated to two deities. You are already very familiar with one of them: Horus, who appears in the form of a falcon. The other is the crocodile god Sobek. The double gate forms the main entrance. The left gate leads to the temple of Sobek, the right gate leads to the identically constructed temple of Horus. Two parallel axes lead you further inside. Following the onion principle, the Holy of Holies is shielded from the outside world by several enclosing walls.

  • Day 6 Day 6: Daraw Market - Gebel Es-Silsileh
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 6: Daraw Market - Gebel Es-Silsileh

A little south of Kom Ombo lies the small town of Daraw. At the local market, farmers from the surrounding area sell fresh fruit and vegetables they have grown themselves. Tomatoes, beans, onions, pomegranates, dates and citrus fruits are piled high on the market stalls. The friendly vendors are always happy to have a chat and welcome your interest. Use the time to talk to the farmers or to watch the hustle and bustle at the market. Further down the river, you come to a section where the Nile Valley becomes remarkably narrow. The river once carved its way through the soft rocky massif here. The Gebel es-Silsileh quarry, where sandstone was quarried for the temples of Karnak and Luxor, is clearly visible. Cuts up to 20 meters high were sometimes made here in order to obtain the coveted building material. The stone blocks could then be transported quickly and easily to their respective destinations via the river.

  • Day 7 Day 7: Edfu - Higaz Island Esna
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 7: Edfu - Higaz Island Esna

After breakfast, you will visit the Horus Temple in Edfu, which is dedicated to the sky god of the same name. This temple is one of the best preserved in the whole country, although it is already around 2,000 years old. In Egyptian mythology, Horus is depicted as a falcon, among other things. It is therefore not surprising that the mighty entrance pylon, which is almost 70 meters wide, greets you with two larger-than-life falcon statues. According to legend, Horus fought against his uncle Seth as they disputed the rightful succession to the throne. The hieroglyphs inside the temple, half of which were hidden in the desert sand until they were uncovered in 1860, reveal the outcome of the battle. The ship sails on and docks at the village of Higz-Bahari Island. In the late afternoon, you take a walk around the village and visit a local family. It is interesting to get to know their lives and hear their stories. We sail further north and pass the Esna lock.

      Day 8: Luxor- Thebes East

Would you like to learn more about Egyptian cuisine? Let the chef of the Dahabiya teach you a typical Egyptian dish today. After the cooking class on board, you will set off to explore the majestic temple complex of Karnak, strolling hand in hand along the ancient paths. The gigantic place of worship was built in honor of the sun god Amun-Re and was constantly expanded by many pharaohs over around two millennia to pay him his due tribute. The oldest buildings are around 4,000 years old. Personalities such as Sethos I and his son Ramses II, for example, had the monumental portico built between the first and second pylons. The Karnak Temple is directly connected to the Luxor Temple via the Avenue of the Ram Sphinxes.

  • Day 9 Day 9: Thebes West
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 9: Thebes West

On todayโ€™s to-do list is the Valley of the Kings to the west of the Nile, beyond the floodplains. This is where the colorfully decorated necropolises of the pharaohs of the New Kingdom (approx. 1500 to 1100 BC) are located. A total of 65 tombs were discovered; most of them have already been plundered by grave robbers. Only the treasure-filled tomb of Tutankhamun remained undiscovered for a long time. To protect the sensitive tombs, only a handful are open to visitors at any one time. You will visit three of them today. The god of fate, Shai, will decide for you which ones. Afterwards, the majestic Terrace Temple of Pharaoh Hatshepsut - a masterpiece from the 18th dynasty - will rise up before you. Our excursion ends with an encounter with the imposing Colossi of Memnon. These colossal statues have long guarded this sacred site. The day draws to a close and you are bid farewell by the warm-hearted crew with a festive folklore event.
