Itinerary of your trip Kilimanjaro Climbing Via Machame Route 8 Days + Crater Over

  • Day 1 Arrival In Kilimanjaro
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Arrival In Kilimanjaro

Welcome to Tanzania!. You will be picked up from the Airport by Thekili-Guides representative and driven to your accommodation in Moshi-Kilimanjaro. The lodge will provide all the essentials for a comfortable stay: cozy rooms, hot water, polite staff, a swimming pool, and Internet access. In the evening there will be a briefing with our managers, who will also make sure you are ready to begin the climb.

  • Day 2 Machame Gate (1790 M) โ€“ Machame Camp (3020 M)
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Machame Gate (1790 M) โ€“ Machame Camp (3020 M)

You will be picked up at your lodge in the morning after breakfast and head towards Machame Gate. At the gA guide and a mountain support crew will arrive at the hotel in the morning in order to meet you and hold a quick briefing, after which you will travel by vehicle to Kilimanjaro National Parkโ€™s entrance: Machame Gate. After the quick formality of acquiring climbing permits and registering with the search and rescue service, the group will start trekking up to Machame Camp, which will take you about 5 to 6 hours to reach. The trekking route passes through the rainforest where there is the possibility of spotting some Black-and-White Colobus monkeys. You will spend the night just above the forest line at 3020 meters. Therefore, you may experience discomfort associated with acclimatization to the high altitude: because of a reduction in your breathing pattern at night, your body gets less oxygen than during the day. Taking altitude into account, you may therefore start feeling sick and experience a headache. Pay attention to your own body and tell your guide if you start feeling any symptoms of altitude sickness.

  • Day 3 Machame Camp (3020 M) โ€“ New Shira Camp (3845 M)
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Machame Camp (3020 M) โ€“ New Shira Camp (3845 M)

After breakfast you will start trekking up to the second high-altitude camp, Shira Camp (3,845 m). On this day you will emerge from the rainforest and for the first time be able to see stunning views of the Shira Plateau laid out in front of you. When you reach the camp, you will have lunch and some rest, after which the group will go on an acclimatization hike towards Lava Tower Camp with a 300-meter gain in altitude. Back down at Shira Camp you will be served a hot dinner.

Note: The acclimatization hike is an easy trek with a slight gain in altitude done in order to speed up the acclimatization process. You should take the acclimatization hikes very seriously. They help increase your chances of successfully summiting Kilimanjaro and save you from the consequences of altitude sickness.

  • Day 4 New Shira Camp (3845 M) โ€“ Lava Tower Hut (4630 M) โ€“ Barranco Camp (3960 M)
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      New Shira Camp (3845 M) โ€“ Lava Tower Hut (4630 M) โ€“ Barranco Camp (3960 M)

After breakfast you will leave Shira Camp (3,845 m) and start your way to the key point of the route: Lava Tower (4,630 m). This section of the route has a lot of ascents and descents that end in a camp at over 4,600 meters. It might be difficult, and you may feel some discomfort, but in order to successfully acclimate to the altitude you have to spend at least 1-2 hours here, so this is where lunch will be.

Then, you will descend to Barranco Camp (3,960 m). Here you can see the famous Barranco Wall, impressive in both its massive size and steepness! This camp is considered by many to be the most beautiful and scenic on Kilimanjaro. At night, you will be treated to a hearty dinner before getting into your sleeping bag for some well-deserved rest.

  • Day 5 Barranco Camp (3960 M) โ€“ Karanga Camp (4035 M)
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Barranco Camp (3960 M) โ€“ Karanga Camp (4035 M)

Today you will tackle the steepest part of this route โ€“ the famous Barranco Wall, also known as the โ€˜Breakfast Wallโ€™. Itโ€™s not as difficult as it looks, and your guide will assist you through this passage in just a little more than an hour. On top of Barranco Wall you can get a glimpse of the southern glaciers of Kibo and take a short rest before continuing towards Karanga Camp. This camp is located less than 100 meters higher than Barranco Camp which gives your body some more time to acclimatize to the altitude. After your lunch at the camp you have the option to do a short round trip towards Barafu Camp for further acclimatization, or you can just relax at your camp.

  • Day 6 Karanga Camp (4035 M) โ€“ Barafu Camp (4640 M)
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Karanga Camp (4035 M) โ€“ Barafu Camp (4640 M)

The trail that you will take today passes back through striking alpine desert expanses and leads you to your final camp before the summit hike โ€“ the Barafu Camp. This camp will be reached after about 3 to 4 hours and sits at an altitude of 4640 meters. You will have some time to relax before the evening meal is served. After dinner you are advised to get as much sleep as possible before the testing climb tomorrow.

  • Day 7 Barafu Camp (4640 M) โ€“ Crater Camp (5730 M)
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Barafu Camp (4640 M) โ€“ Crater Camp (5730 M)

In the early morning, you will start the most challenging part of the ascent as the sun rises. You should reach Stella Point, the crater rim of Kibo, after about 5-7 hours of strenuous climbing up the scree and ash paths. From Stella Point you will head towards the highest camp on Kilimanjaro โ€“ the Crater Camp โ€“ which is situated at an altitude of 5730 m. From here there are breathtaking views of the surrounding glaciers.

  • Day 8 Crater Camp (5730 M) โ€“ Uhuru Peak (5895 M) โ€“ Mweka Camp (3080 M)
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Crater Camp (5730 M) โ€“ Uhuru Peak (5895 M) โ€“ Mweka Camp (3080 M)

The first sunlight marks the start of your final ascent towards the summit. It will be a slow and arduous 2 hours or so before you reach the highest point in Africa, Uhuru Peak, which towers above anywhere else in Africa at 5895 meters. From the peak, you will be able to see the surrounding summits, glaciers and landscapes being lit up by the warm morning sun โ€“ a truly unforgettable experience. After a short break and the mandatory summit pictures, you will return to Barafu Camp where the rest of the climbing crew will await you. Here you will have some time to rest and a much-needed warm meal will be served. Afterwards, you will continue your descent to Mweka Camp (3080 m) which will take you about 3 hours. At Mweka Camp you will have an evening meal followed by a well-deserved deep nightโ€™s sleep.

  • Day 9 Mweka Camp (3080 M) โ€“ Mweka Gate (1630 M)
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Mweka Camp (3080 M) โ€“ Mweka Gate (1630 M)

After breakfast you will be invited to take part in the traditional farewell ceremony with your mountain crew before the final leg of your climb leads you back through the lush rainforest. A gentle descent of up to 3 hours takes you to Mweka Gate. After your descent the whole group will gather to congratulate you. Then, our driver will take you back to the Lodge. The rest of the day is yours. You may relax and stay at the pool, celebrate your accomplishment with a couple of drinks or just doze away contentedly.
