Kathmandu - Lukla - Kathmandu Note: In certain circumstances, when adverse weather conditions or operational limitations prevent flights from operating directly between Kathmandu and Lukla, an alternative option is to fly to Ramechhap Airport. Ramechhap Airport is situated approximately 130 kilometers east of Kathmandu. In such cases, our team will arrange transportation from Kathmandu to Ramechhap and vice versa to ensure a seamless transition for your Lukla flight. This arrangement minimizes potential disruptions caused by weather conditions and ensures you can reach your destination without inconvenience. Rest assured that our team will handle all the logistics involved in this alternative route to ensure you a smooth and hassle-free travel experience.

From there, you will encounter undulating terrain, with some sections going uphill and others going downhill, known as "Nepali flats." This variation in the landscape adds a certain charm and challenge to the trek.

      Upon reaching Khare, you will have the chance to settle in and relax. If you still have the energy and time permits, it is highly recommended to embark on an acclimatization walk up the grassy ridge behind the village. This other trek offers an opportunity to adapt to the altitude and rewards you with remarkable views.


      From the grassy ridge, you can gaze across the glacier and observe the flattened ridge that lies ahead, which you will ascend the following day. This vantage point also provides a Western perspective, allowing you to admire the grandeur of Mera Peak in all its glory.

The route takes you along the northern flank of the glacier, where the terrain is relatively safer with fewer crevasses.


      As you traverse the glacier, youโ€™ll witness the mesmerizing beauty of the surrounding snow-covered peaks and the vast expanse of ice. The Mera La, a rounded snow col, will come into view. This col acts as a bridge, connecting the southern side to the central sweep of the Mera glacier that descends from Mera Peak itself.


      Once you cross the Mera La pass, your camp awaits just beyond it. This will be your resting place for the night in a picturesque location surrounded by the stunning Himalayan landscape. As you settle into camp, take a moment to absorb the serenity of the surroundings and appreciate the accomplishment of reaching this point.

      Day 12: Trek To High Camp

      Ascending towards the summit of Mera Peak, the climbers put on their crampons again. They climb back up to the pass at Mera La and continue their ascent up the glacier. The route leads them towards a rocky outcrop where they establish their high camp.


      This high camp is on the mountainโ€™s edge, providing awe-inspiring and panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks. To the east, Kangchenjunga is visible above the ridge of Chamlang, while the distinctive ice spire of Baruntse can be seen to the left of Makalu. Between Baruntse and the beautiful twin peaks of Ama Dablam, the climbers catch glimpses of Nuptse, the imposing south face of Lhotse, and Lhotse Shar.


      Over the ridge, the iconic summit of Mount Everest comes into view. The climbers can observe the final stages of the traditional route up the southeast ridge and over the south summit to the summit ridge. Additionally, the majestic peak of Cho-Oyu, the sixth-highest mountain in the world, can be admired.

      The summit day of Mera Peak begins early, with the climbers being awakened around 2 am or possibly even earlier, depending on the group size. They are provided hot tea and a high-energy meal to fuel their ascent. The journey towards the summit of Mera Peak starts by ascending the main glacier, with a crossing to the south side as they approach a snow hump-back ridge. This section of the route does not require technical climbing skills, but the 30-degree slopes still present a challenge.


      As the climbers continue, the slope gradually steepens behind the ridge before swinging diagonally westward. At this point, the summit comes back into view, and they find themselves on the level summit ridge. Before reaching the final steep ascent, the climbers will attach themselves to a fixed rope laid by their guide. With the assistance of an ice axe and a jumar (a mechanical ascender), they navigate the final 30-meter, 55-degree pitch that leads to the summit of Mera Peak.


      Upon reaching the summit, a breathtaking panorama awaits, providing clear views of Everest and the surrounding mountain ranges. It is a moment of immense accomplishment and awe as the climbers take in the beauty and magnitude of their surroundings. After savoring the experience and congratulating themselves, they begin their descent back to Khare, where a celebration awaits to commemorate their successful summit of Mera Peak.

      After the successful summit of Mera Peak, the journey begins as the climbers make their way back down the Hinku Valley towards Khote. This day mainly involves descending, but the terrain presents challenges, particularly as they walk on a rocky moraine.


      The climbers must watch their steps as they descend and exercise caution to avoid twisted ankles or other potential injuries. The rocky terrain requires attentiveness and careful foot placement to maintain stability and ensure a safe descent.


      While the physical demands may be reduced compared to the ascent, maintaining focus and taking necessary precautions is still crucial. The climbers should follow the guidance of their experienced guides to navigate the terrain safely and reach Khote without any incidents.


      Descending from the high altitude and enjoying the scenic views along the way, the climbers will continue their journey towards the village of Khote, where they can rest and recuperate after their challenging expedition.

      After breakfast in Khote, the trek continues with a walk along the river bank for about an hour. From there, the ascent begins as the route takes a new path that stays high on the open hillside instead of winding through the forests below. This new route offers quicker progress and provides fantastic views back to Mera Peak, allowing climbers to reminisce about their successful summit.


      However, itโ€™s important to note that this day will be physically demanding as it mainly involves ascending. The continuous uphill climb can be challenging, requiring endurance and stamina. Climbers must pace themselves, take regular breaks, and stay hydrated throughout the trek.


      Despite the difficulty, the breathtaking views and the sense of accomplishment from reaching the summit of Mera Peak will undoubtedly serve as motivation to push through. The experienced guides will lead the way, ensuring the groupโ€™s safety and providing encouragement along the journey.

      After leaving Khote, the trail continues with rises and high plateaux, gradually gaining elevation. The landscape offers stunning views of the Hinku wilderness, allowing climbers to reflect on their memorable journey and appreciate the south face of Mera Peak, which they have just conquered.


      As the group continues their descent, they eventually reach the craggy Zatrwa La Pass at 4660m. From this vantage point, climbers can take a final look back at the wilderness of the Hinku Valley and admire the awe-inspiring south face of Mera Peak.


      After crossing the pass, the descent becomes steeper as the trail leads towards the rocky outcrop of Zatr Og. The rugged terrain and cascading streams accompany the climbers entering the Sherpa-populated Dudh Koshi valley.


      The trek descends further into the rocky slopes of the Kalo Himal, also known as the "black mountains." The path winds through this dramatic landscape, providing trekkers with a unique and memorable experience. The rushing streams and cascades add to the natural beauty of the surroundings.


      As the climbers continue their descent, they gradually approach the bustling tourist hub of Lukla. This town is the gateway to the Everest region and is a popular stop for trekkers and mountaineers. The vibrant atmosphere and the presence of fellow adventurers create a sense of excitement and camaraderie.


      Reaching Lukla marks the end of the challenging Mera Peak expedition. Itโ€™s a time to rest, celebrate, and cherish the memories of their successful climb.
