Itinerary of your trip Mera Peak Climbing

  • Day 1 Day 1: Arrival At Kathmandu, Overnight At Hotel
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 1: Arrival At Kathmandu, Overnight At Hotel

A representative of Unique Adventure International will meet and greet you at the Tribhuwan airport and transfer you to your hotel. The rest of your time is free after youโ€™ve got into your room. Depending on your arrival time, your expedition briefing will be given around 4.30-5pm in the evening. This is also a great opportunity to get acquainted with your fellow group members.

Your trek leader [sirdar] will meet you in the lobby of the hotel. When this is done, you could go around shopping for any equipment you may need for the climb. This will also help you get familiar with your surroundings. When this is done, you get back to your hotel for dinner and then enjoy some good rest to get rid of all that jetlag before your flight the next day to Lukla. Overnight at your hotel.

Please note, we will need to depart the hotel at around 2-3 am early morning to drive to Manthali (Ramechhap) airport to catch our flight to Lukla. At this time of day when there is usually light traffic, the drive should take about 4 hours. Roads in Nepal are not of the same standard as in the west, there may be potholed areas and the last section is roughshod. (Occasionally, flights may run directly from Kathmandu to Lukla, in which case we will use these instead if possible. NULLtheless, till the time a booking is made when weโ€™ve got rid of this nasty virus, the airport renovation work will have been completed by then and flights will be regular from Kathmandu itself; and you can enjoy your sleep even better).

    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 10: Khare To Mera High Camp (5,780M/18,958Ft): 6-7 Hours

From today we start preparations for the big push. We ascend the Mera glacier up to a rocky outcrop to establish High Camp at 5,780m. From camp we move quickly up onto the glacier. Once on the glacier, the gradient eases off and we follow it up to the Mera La, a very cold and windy spot. From here the trail is not so steep, and it continues up the glacier to high camp, at 5,780m, a small busy camp site. From camp it is possible to see five out of the fourteen highest mountains on earth, stretching from Kanchenjunga in the east through Makalu, Lhotse and Everest to Cho Oyu in the west. The sights are breathtaking! This afternoon there will be a final gear check and we will prepare our clothes ready for tomorrow. After sunset (look out for the last orange/maroon glow on the summit of Makalu) we retire to the warmth of our sleeping bags to rest before the summit attempt tomorrow. Please note that High Camp is extremely cold and high and camping space is very limited. There is no dining or toilet tent. Our guides will bring food and drinks to your tents and briefings will be done by the guides on a tent to tent basis after supper is done. We sleep the night out in our tents at an altitude of 5780m.

Day 11: Mera High Camp To Summit (6,476M/21,247Ft) And Back To Khare (5045M/16,547Ft): 8-9 Hours

This is one big day for the expedition. We wake up around 2 in the morning for breakfast. Itโ€™s going to be very chilly initially but we soon warm up as we continue up the glacier and onto an unusual ridge. The first rays of the sun hit the big peaks in an amazing red glow. The route is still non-technical as we slowly climb higher into the ever-thinning air. The slope steepness goes for a section behind the ridge and the summit comes back into view. At the foot of the final steep summit cone, we may use a fixed rope if the climbing leader believes itโ€™s required.

The summit is only a few meters away. From the summit, we take in spectacular views of the mighty Himalayas including Mt. Everest (8,848m), Cho-Oyu (8,201m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,463m), Kangchenjunga (8,586m), Nuptse (7,855m), Chamlang (7,319m), Baruntse (7 ,129m) and others. Later, we retrace our steps back to the high camp where we rest for a while before descending to Khare for a well earned overnight.

  • Day 12 Day 12: Reserve Day For Any Unpredictable Contingency
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 12: Reserve Day For Any Unpredictable Contingency

There is absolutely no guarantee we will have fair weather on our planned day for the summit. Therefore, this day is set aside as a contingency in case we are unable to summit Mera on the targeted day due to inclement weather conditions or any other unpredictable reason. However, if the trip goes smoothly, this day will not be required.

  • Day 13 Day 13: Khare To Kothe (3600M/11808Ft): 4-5 Hours
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 13: Khare To Kothe (3600M/11808Ft): 4-5 Hours

We backtrack from Khare to Kothe along the same trail used previously. After reaching Kothe, we into celebration mood to enjoy our success by enjoying some local delicacies and wines and simply chill out after all the hard work before we do an overnight in Kothe, sleeping at an altitude of 3600m.

  • Day 14 Day 14: Kothe To Thuli Kharka (4,300 M/14,107Ft): 6-7 Hours
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 14: Kothe To Thuli Kharka (4,300 M/14,107Ft): 6-7 Hours

After a good sleep and a healthy breakfast, we begin our walk wandering through the forest and beside the river, where our trail then winds up through thick forest of birch, rhododendron and pine, seemingly forever. Itโ€™s a while before we break out of the forest, to small shrub like rhododendron and then above the tree line altogether as we traverse around a lot of hillocks to our last camp at Chetrabu, or Thuli Kharka. It will be a solid seven hour day winding our way up to camp but we are also now fit and experienced as we hike with a steady gait that makes it manageable for us to cope with some lengthy hiking on the trails. In clear weather much of Mera Himal can be seen and remote valleys leading up to its south side, a small reward for our ascent. We haul up at Thuli kharka for the night and sleep at an altitude of 4300m.

  • Day 15 Day 15: Thuli Kharka To Lukla Via Zatrwa La Pass: 6-7 Hours
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 15: Thuli Kharka To Lukla Via Zatrwa La Pass: 6-7 Hours

After breakfast, we do a short steady climb up to the pass of Zatrwa La (approx 4600m), and then another 45mins or so onto another pass which is slightly lower and our last before we set on a long breezy descent. The terrain and countryside is amazing, with open views to the south and west; to Karyolug and Numbur and rows and rows of foothills. Initially, it is a steep descent over rock slabs, snow and ice, and then steep pastures down to the rhododendron forests which show the first signs of permanent farming activities. It is a lengthy hike to the relatively steamy environment of Lukla, so walk slow and easy, but maintain your pace or it will be a very long day. Most people donโ€™t need too much encouragement on our last dayโ€™s trek, with the thought of cold drinks and so on and a chance to put your feet up on the table. Overnight at Lukla.

  • Day 16 Day 16: Fly Out To Kathmandu
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 16: Fly Out To Kathmandu

At eventide, we attend a celebration farewell dinner together and while enjoying our delicious meals, we are entertained to some thrilling folk dances performed by the local belles. Overnight at our hotel.
