Several soaring peaks, such as Khumbutse, Lingtren, and Changtse loom before us in the east as Everest now comes into view. Not until we reach Kala Patthar (5550m) do we get a 360 degree close up view of Mount Everest. Your guide will also show you how to use the ropes during the ascent and descent. This training is not too technical, but is important to ensure your safety and wellbeing. After some basic training you will feel more secure and certain of getting to the summit. To assist you to further acclimatize to this altitude we may decide to trek to High Camp and back.  The rest of the day we can rest and prepare for tomorrowโ€™s climb. We will stay overnight at the base camp.

  • Day 15 Day 15: Island Peak Base Camp To Island Peak Summit (6,189M) & Trek Back To Base Camp 10-12 Hours.
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 15: Island Peak Base Camp To Island Peak Summit (6,189M) & Trek Back To Base Camp 10-12 Hours.

This is the day we have been waiting for and we will have to wake up around midnight to 1 am to complete the 10 to 12-hour climb.  The goal is to reach the summit before lunchtime, for in the afternoon there is a possibility of strong winds. Initially, we head up above Base Camp climbing along a steep hillside and then come to a point where we cross boulders and the slope becomes narrower. The trail then crosses a steep gully from where we follow the ridgeline to the base of the glacier that continues right up to the summit. A sharp incline on a snowy slope eventually takes us to the summit. Your guides will very likely attach ropes at this point โ€“ fixed, and person to person. The rope will stretch to about 350 meters depending on the depth of the snow and if there are any crevices. In previous climbs there have been several crevices where we have had to use ladders to cross. At the summit we can sit back and enjoy up some of the most stunning views you will ever see. This is truly an exhilarating moment and a perfect photo opportunity. We will then head back down to Island Peak Base Camp where we can celebrate on our successful climb to Island Peak summit.

Depending on the weather and time available, we may take another route and visit the Gompa (monastery) at Upper Pangboche, claimed to be the oldest in the Khumbu region, or we may alternatively head directly to the attractive Pangboche Village that is surrounded by enormous mountains, such as Everest in the north, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Khangtega in the east, the Kongde Range in the south and with views looking down to the Imja Tse River below.
