Day 1: Visit one of Lisbonโ€™s city quarters

Stop At: Lisbon District, Lisbon District, Central Portugal
On this first day of your Charming luxury tour, you arrive at Lisbon airport. Your driver will pick you up at the airport arrivals hall and bring you to your hotel, so you can unpack and freshen up.

Depending on your flightโ€™s arrival time and on your energy levels, we can visit one of Lisbonโ€™s city quarters. So, put on your walking shoes, stretch your legs and start enjoying this magnificent city.

Lisbon is built on seven hills, so some streets might have a steep climb and also keep in mind that most of the streets in Lisbon have cobble stones and accommodating pavements.

This walk will provide an exciting insight into the Lisbon experience before we accompany you back to your hotel to freshen up for dinner at one of Lisbonโ€™s exclusive restaurants.

Day 2: A day in Lisbon

Stop At: Palacio de Belem, Praca Afonso de Albuquerque 1349-022, Lisbon 1300-004 Portugal
The Belรจm city quarter with:
โ€“ Belรจm Palace: the residence of Portugalโ€™s president since 1910.
โ€“ Pasteis de Belรจm: on the way from the palace to the monastery, witness people queueing on the street for the popular and delicious Pasteis de Belรจm.
โ€“ Mosteiro dos Jerรณnimos: this monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the resting place of Vasco da Gama, famed Portuguese explorer and the first European to reach India by sea (15th century).
โ€“ Discoveries Monument: the Padrรฃo dos Descobrimentos is located across the Jerรณnimos Monastery on the north bank of the Tagus River. It was built in 1960 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator, a major figure in Portugalโ€™s history and the age of discoveries.
โ€“ Belรจm Tower: this UNESCO World Heritage Monument is located further along the riverโ€™s bank. This fortress built in 1515 guards the entrance to the harbour of Lisbon. It was the starting point for many discovery explorations and for many sailors the last sight of their homeland.

Stop At: Palacio Nacional da Ajuda, Largo da Ajuda, Lisbon 1300-018 Portugal
Palรกcio Nacional da Ajuda: this palace is one of Europeโ€™s most romantic buildings with rich interior as a testimony to a once wealthy kingdom and is one of the most beautiful palaces you will ever see.

Stop At: Lisbon Baixa, Lisbon Portugal
The Baixa city quarter starts on the north bank of the Tagus River with the Praรงa do Comรฉrcio which is the ceremonial entrance to Lisbon. This square is surrounded by classic buildings with the triumphal arch which offers a gateway to the Rua Augusta, a popular shopping destination with intimate side streets. One of these side streets accommodates the Elevador Santa Justa which is a wrought-iron industrial marvel. Giving you a birdโ€™s eye view of the many boutiques in this area.

Stop At: Alfama, Lisbon Portugal
Before dinner, you will get a chance to freshen up at your hotel. Then, we proceed to Alfama, the oldest city quarter. Your guide will tell you all about this oldest city district and the derivation of its name. It is home to the Sรฃo Jorge castle, the Sรฉ (cathedral) and many other historic buildings. But its most adorable facet is its labyrinth of streets with an element of surprise around every corner.

Dinner will be at a typical Portuguese restaurant and afterwards you will enjoy an evening of Fado at one of the intimate local Fado bars.

Day 3: Cabo da Roca - Sintra

Stop At: Farol do cabo da Roca, Estrada do Cabo da Roca, Sintra 2705-001 Portugal
Today, after breakfast, we leave Lisbon behind to visit Sintra and its surroundings.

To get there, we follow the sweeping Tagus River to its mouth where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. We pass Estoril, known for its casino and travel further to Cabo da Roca, the most westerly point of mainland Europe.

Stop At: Quinta da Regaleira, Rua Barbosa do Bocage, Sintra 2710-567 Portugal
After a short stop at Cabo da Roca, the tour continues inland to Quinta da Regaleira. This residence was built in the 20th century. The architecture is hauntingly ornate with gardens that are enchanting and styled to represent ancient secret orders, with their hidden tunnels and symbolism.

Stop At: Palacio de Monserrate, R. Visc. de Monserrate, Sintra 2710-591 Portugal
After lunch, we continue to the Palace of Monserrate, a 19th-century mansion with Islamic inspired architecture. The palaceโ€™s fine detail is simply perfection, thanks to the inspiration of Sir Francis Cook, an English merchant who built his ideal palace. The quiet, peaceful gardens contain exotic plants from Cookโ€™s personal collection.

Stop At: Sintra, Sintra, Sintra Municipality, Lisbon District, Central Portugal
After this visit, we take you to your hotel in Sintra, where you can freshen up before dinner at a select restaurant near the centre of Sintra. If desired your guide will take you to the city centre for a short stroll.

Day 4: Sintra

Stop At: Park and National Palace of Pena, Estrada da Pena, Sintra 2710-609 Portugal
The exterior of Palacio da Pena is vividly painted and offers a fusion of all kinds of artistic styles and architectural influences. The interior is an equally interesting cornucopia of styles. King Ferdinand II, who commissioned its construction, wished to reflect a scene from an opulent Italian opera. The forests around the palace have several special plants, hidden pathways and great viewpoints.

Stop At: Castelo dos Mouros, Estrada da Pena Parque de Monserrate, Sintra 2710-609 Portugal
Continuing on our journey we next visit the Castelo dos Mouros, a Moorish castle constructed in the 9th century as a fortified observatory. Its hilltop location amidst dense forests is excellent for spectacular panoramic views over Sintra and even further afield!

Afterwards, your guide will accompany you back to the centre of Sintra in time for you to enjoy a free afternoon and evening! Spend it as you desire, maybe take lunch, go shopping, or continue your excursion with a visit to the Palรกcio Nacional de Sintra and even enjoy an intimate dinner at a restaurant of your choice.

Day 5: Mafra - Buddha Eden Gardens - ร“bidos

Stop At: Palacio Nacional de Mafra, Terreiro Dom Joao v, Mafra 2640-492 Portugal
After breakfast, we drive to another spectacular monument. The Italian influenced Baroque Neo-classical palace of Mafra, which was built in the 18th century. This palace accommodates a monastery and includes a basilica. The palace with 1200 rooms and the monksโ€™ quarters is huge! In earlier days, it did not only accommodate 300 monks, but also the royal family and their entourage, plus on occasions many guests. Its north turret and corresponding wing were occupied by the king, the south turret by the queen. One of the most amazing rooms is the large library thought to be among the most beautiful in the world and holding rare books, including the Nuremberg Chronicle (1493).

The next stop is the largest oriental garden in Europe known as the Buddha Eden Gardens. Situated on approximately 35 hectares interspersed with large Buddha statues, ornate pagodas, statues in the mode of the terracotta army and other intriguing Asian influenced sculptures. A surprising far eastern encounter in the far west of Europe.

Stop At: Castelo de Obidos, Rua Direita Santa Maria, Obidos 2510-079 Portugal
After you enjoyed this sprawling spectacle, we continue to the town that time forgot. ร“bidos is a medieval city, famed as Villa das Rainhas (queenโ€™s town), With its charming narrow cobble-stone streets, traditional painted houses and sturdy castle ร“bidos offers a unique window on Portugalโ€™s past.

Drink in the atmosphere and wander in and out of interesting shops along the main street and be sure to taste Ginja (a cherry liqueur) served in delectable chocolate cups. Delicious!

Your driver will then take you a little further north to Cela where you can dine at your 5-star hotel, where you will also spend a comfortable night.

Day 6: Alcobaรงa - Nazarรฉ - Sรฃo Martinho do Porto - Foz do Arelho

Stop At: Monastery of Alcobaca, Praca 25 de Abril, Alcobaca 2460-018 Portugal
After breakfast, we leave for Alcobaรงa, where you will visit the Cistercian monastery of Santa Maria, a UNESCO World Heritage monument. Since the 12th century the monastery has been a centre of learning and is known for its agricultural excellence. Which even permeates local society today. The church which is one of Portugalโ€™s largest, holds 2 royal tombs which hide an intriguing storyโ€ฆ Your guide will tell you all about it!

Stop At: Nazare, Nazare, Leiria District, Central Portugal
After this visit, your guide will drive you to Nazarรฉ, a cosy coastal fishing town with an expansive sandy beach and a large marina. Along the seafront you can still spot traditionally clad women drying locally caught fish on the beach.

Sรญtio, which towers over Nazarรฉ, offers sweeping birdโ€™s eye views over the town, beach and Atlantic Ocean. Its church is also worth a visit, if only for the black Madonna and its related legend.

Nazarรฉ is synonymous with extreme surfing. World-renowned Brazilian surfer, Rodrigo Koxa, recently broke the world record for the highest wave ever surfed at Nazarรฉโ€™s infamous North Beach.

Stop At: Sao Martinho do Porto, Sao Martinho do Porto, Alcobaca, Leiria District, Central Portugal
All this healthy sea air can make you hungry so itโ€™s high time to be whisked off to your specially selected restaurant in Sรฃo Martinho do Porto for lunch. While savouring the dishes and quaffing wine, enjoy the views over the sandy horseshoe-shaped bay that attracts thousands of tourists every year.

Stop At: Foz do Arelho Beach, Foz do Arelho 2500 Portugal
After lunch, we will drive you further south along the coast to Foz do Arelho, via Caldas da Rainha and back to your hotel in Cela. While en-route, we will stop, at your request, so you can take pictures of the sites and incredible panoramas.

Day 7: Batalha - Fรกtima - Tomar

Stop At: Batalha Monastery, Largo Infante Dom Henrique 2440, Batalha 2440-484 Portugal
Today, after packing your bags and eating breakfast, we drive you to Batalha to visit its monastery, another UNESCO World Heritage site. The Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitรณria is a beautiful example of Portuguese and European architecture. Its construction took over 150 years, so covers different architectural styles, including Gothic, Manueline and even Renaissance.

Stop At: Fatima, Fatima, Santarem District, Central Portugal
After this visit, we drive inland for a delicious lunch in Fรกtima. This town is a renowned Catholic pilgrimage destination where you can stop for a while to take in the huge square which plays host to its old church, chapel and contemporary cathedral.

Stop At: Aqueduto do Convento de Cristo, Casal do Sobreiro, Carregueiros Troรงo desde o vale dos Brasรตes atรฉ Casal do Sobreiro , aprox. 2km pelo vale da Felpinheira, Tomar Portugal
We then drive you to Tomar, land of the Knights Templar, for a visit to the Convento do Cristo, a UNESCO World Heritage site. All the tales and stories your guide will tell you will provide an evocative window on events of the past, leaving you with an indelible impression of history.

Afterwards, your driver/guide will take you to the historic centre for a short walkabout, followed by dinner and transfer to your hotel in Tomar.

Day 8: Conimbriga - Coimbra

Stop At: Roman Ruins and Museum of Conimbriga, R. das Ruinas 7, Condeixa-a-Nova 3150-220 Portugal
Today we relocate further north. After breakfast, we drive to Conimbriga to visit the Roman ruins.

Stop At: University of Coimbra, Paco das Escolas, Coimbra 3000-240 Portugal
After that, we drive to Coimbra, home to one of the oldest universities in Europe. Here you will visit the ancient university featuring its Baroque library โ€“ Biblioteca Joanina โ€“ built in the early 18th century and today still one of the most opulent European libraries. Only small groups of visitors can enter the library at one time, in order to comply with the ideal atmospheric and preservation conditions.

After lunch, your guide will take you on a guided walk of discovery through the lower and/or higher part of the city of Coimbra. There may be time to do some shopping before dinner!

Day 9: Serra da Estrella region

Stop At: Serra da Estrela Natural Park, Seia-Covilha, Centro, Seia, Portugal
Today, you can rest your feet a little, because, after breakfast, your driver/guide will drive through the Serra da Estrella region so you can admire the gorgeous nature. We will pass a schist village or two and stop for a wine and cheese tasting at a local farm.

En-route, we will stop whenever you wish, so you can enjoy the sites, the sounds, the aromas and maybe take a few pictures of this beautiful region.

Day 10: Rio Mondego - Serra do Buรงaco - Aveiro

Welcome to the Rio Mondego, the largest river fully in Portugal. After breakfast, we travel along the river to its source in the Serra da Estrela and further through the Serra do Buรงaco to Aveiro.

Aveiro, because of its canals, is nicknamed โ€˜the Portuguese Veniceโ€™ therefore, a boat trip is a must! Witness the extraordinary colourful canalside facades of the local houses, it is a unique sight.

After the boat trip and lunch, you can make use of your free time to enjoy the city further. Maybe you would like to do some souvenir shopping or just relax.

Day 11: City of Porto

The promise of Porto. We hope you had a good nightโ€™s rest, because today, after breakfast, we drive to the city of Porto. During an informative stroll, your guide will show you all the relevant highlights and maybe even visit the world-famous Lello bookstore, where it is rumoured J.K. Rowling found inspiration for her Harry Potter books when she worked there.

Today, travel the Douro River and see a unique view of the Douroโ€™s valleys, vineyards and vistas. This is one of the most relaxing days of this tour with a day cruise along the Douro River. The Douro region is world-famous for its wines and vineyards. Marvel at the steep-sloped terraces cut from verdant hillsides, you can almost feel the grapes ripening on the vines and the promise of the taste of an exceptional vintage!
