Saint Blaise, identified by medieval Slavs with the pagan god Veles, is the patron saint of the city of Dubrovnik and formerly the protector of the independent Republic of Ragusa. It was constructed in 1715 by the Venetian architect Marino Gropelli on the spot of an older Romanesque church that was destroyed in the 1667 earthquake. Many Summer Festival celebrations and the city’s New Year’s Eve celebrations take place on the church’s front steps. The Franciscan Monastery in Dubrovnik is a large complex that contains not only a monastery and a church, but a library, a museum, and a pharmacy as well. The pharmacy, which is still in operation today, actually dates back to 1317, making it one of the longest-operating pharmacies in the world. The monastery was built a bit later, in 1360, and is a wonderful example of Romanesque architectural style. It houses a gorgeous cloister full of leafy green plants that provides a welcome reprieve from the busy Stradun just outside. The library is quite a sight as well, as it contains more than 20,000 books.

The two islands in front of Perast are the most photographed view in the central place of this fjord.

Continue to Kotor Bay, with its high mountains and scenic coastline dotted with little villages. This amazing landscape was created 300,000 years ago by tectonic forces crashing together and creating the "Fjords of the Mediterranean."
Kotor Old City, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Kotor was first mentioned in 168 BC, and was settled during Ancient Roman times, when it was known as Acruvium, It has been fortified since the early Middle Ages, The city became part of the Venetian Republic in 1420 and except for two periods of Ottoman rule, it remained under Venice until 1797, It is these four centuries of Venetian domination that have given the city the typical Venetian architecture. Kotor has one of the best preserved medieval old towns in the Adriatic and is home to several sights of interest, including the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon (1166), and the ancient walls which stretch for 3 miles on the steep hillside directly above the city.

Departing your transportation, you will begin a walking tour of a town that was first mentioned in the old Greek legend of the grandson of Zeus Cadmo and his wife Harmony. You will be walking through the narrow streets and small squares of a fortified medieval town, mostly influenced by the ancient republic of Venice.
