Day 2: Hike Dujiangyan Irrigation System And Mount Qingcheng

At 08:00am our guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel in Chengdu. Then you will head for the northwestern part of Chengdu Plain to visit Dujiangyan Irrigation System, which together with Mount Qingcheng, is a UNESCO world cultural heritage site. It takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes to drive there.

Dujiangyan Irrigation System was built by the ancient Chinese over 2,250 years ago. In order to control floods and in the meanwhile irrigate the farmland across Chengdu Plain, the ancient Chinese constructed this huge project, which has made Chengdu one of the richest regions of China during the past 2,000 years. The construction of this project is an ancient technological wonder of the country. We will explore this big water project by walking, and our guide will also take you to explore the temples and ancient trade trails in the mountains at the other side of the river, where many other tour groups do not go because of not willing to walk too much. You will spend about 2 hours in total at the irrigation system learning about the history and culture of this ancient project.

In the afternoon we will explore Mount Qingcheng by hiking. This beautiful Taoism mountain is a good combination of beautiful nature and Taoism culture. We will walk to explore the traditional architectures of the temples scattered in the woods and mountains.

      Day 3: Dujiangyan-Songpan-Jiuzhaigou

Today we will leave Chengdu Plain and head northwards for the Tibetan Plateau. Our destination is Jiuzhaigou National Park, and on the way you will not only see great mountains and valleys, but also minority villages of the Qiang, Muslim and Tibetan ethnic groups.

We will stop at Songpan Ancient Town for a short visit. Most of the locals here are Muslims and Tibetans. This 2,800-meter-altitude town still has its magnificent city walls. After Songpan, we will see more and more grassland, yaks and also forests before finally reaching Jiuzhaigou.

  • Day 4 Day 4: Whole-Day Exploration Of Jiuzhaigou National Park
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 4: Whole-Day Exploration Of Jiuzhaigou National Park

Jiuzhaigou National Park is very big, and the hiking trails around the lakes and waterfalls as well as in the forests are in total more than 50 kilometers long. Therefore we will spend two days exploring this park. Today we will mainly walk at the higher parts of the park, with altitudes ranging from 2,500 meters to 3,100 meters above sea level.

We will first take a sightseeing bus to the highest elevation where visitors are allowed to arrive, and then start our exploration by walking. There is an old saying that goes like this, ‘You will never want to see any water views after visiting Jiuzhaigou’. There are over 100 lakes scattered in the valleys, and some of them are crystal clear. You could see fishes swimming inside.

The altitudes of the lakes and waterfalls in Jiuzhaigou are between 2,000 to 3,100 meters above sea level. Hiking here is also a good way to adapt to the altitudes and helps prepare for the hiking of Huanglong National Park two days later, because Huanglong National Park is between 3,100 meters to 3,570 meters above sea level.

      Meals provided: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Overnight: a 4-star standard hotel outside Jiuzhaigou National Park

      Hotel altitude: around 2,000 meters

Hiking Distance: 10 to 15km, when hiking Jiuzhaigou Park, you could decide freely how much to hike depends on the weather conditions as well as your mood and physical conditions that day, because there are sightseeing buses inside the park connecting all the major lakes and waterfalls, besides hiking paths.

  • Day 5 Day 5: Continue To Explore Jiuzhaigou National Park
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 5: Continue To Explore Jiuzhaigou National Park

Today we will continue to explore this beautiful park by walking. Jiuzhaigou literally means Nine Village Valley, because there used to be nine Tibetan villages here, hence the name. After it became a national park in early 1980s, most of the villagers moved out, and those who still lived inside no longer did farming but run souvenir shops instead. In this way, the ecosystem of this beautiful park has been protected. We will also walk into a village and take a look.

Jiuzhaigou National Park also has many species of precious plants and animals. In the mountains there are wild pandas and golden monkeys. During the hiking, we will also see bamboos which pandas can eat. There are also different species of birds flying in the woods. Mandarin ducks might also be seen on some of the lakes.

Jiuzhaigou National Park was listed as a World Natural Heritage as early as 1992. Generally speaking, this two-day exploration of Jiuzhaigou National Park might be the highlight of this trip.

      Meals provided: breakfast, lunch, diner.

Overnight: a 4-star standard hotel outside Jiuzhaigou National Park

      Hotel altitude: around 2,000 meters

Hiking Distance: 10 to 15km, just like yesterday, but to see different lakes and waterfalls today

  • Day 6 Day 6: Hike Huanglong National Park, Drive To Songpan
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 6: Hike Huanglong National Park, Drive To Songpan

We will drive to Huanglong National Park after breakfast, and it takes about 2 hours to get there. Also a UNESCO world natural heritage site, Huanglong is much smaller than Jiuzhaigou, and we will spend around 4 hours hiking in the park, from 3,100 meters to 3,570 meters altitude. The water view in Huanglong might vary a lot in different seasons. Your will see more pools and waterfalls between June and October than other months of the year. And the hiking here could be more challenging than that in Jiuzhaigou, but it’s also a good opportunity to appreciate the beauty of nature, such as the great mountains and lush forests here.

When finishing the exploration of Huanglong National Park, we will drive to Songpan and stay overnight there.

      Meals provided: breakfast, lunch, dinner

Overnight: a 3-star standard hotel in Songpan

      Hotel altitude: 2,800 meters

Hiking Distance: about 12km, and since the altitudes are higher today, you could also choose to take the cable car either when going up or going down the mountain, and if you choose to take the cable car one way, the total hiking distance will be around 8.5km. The cable car in Huanglong Park does not go from the bottom directly to the highest lake of Wucaichi(also known as Five-Colored Pool), but only to the middle part of the mountain.

  • Day 7 Day 7: Songpan-Mounigou Park-Taoping Qiang Minority Village
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 7: Songpan-Mounigou Park-Taoping Qiang Minority Village

Today we will hike Mounigou Park located about 16 kilometers from Songpan Ancient Town. Mounigou Park is less famous and also less-travelled than Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong, but still quite worth a visit. We will walk in the  tranquil forests and visit the spectacular big waterfall as well as the beautiful lakes. Zhaga Waterfall in Mounigou Park is almost 100 meets high and 35 meters wide, and we will walk around it and appreciate its beauty and magnificence from a close distance.

In the afternoon we will drive to Taoping Qiang Minority Village for a visit and stay overnight there. Taoping Qiang Minority Village has a long history of over 2,000 years. Walking around the houses and exploring the watchtowers can be a lot of fun here. The Qiang people are a minority group that have been known as ‘the people living above the clouds’. Taoping Qiang Minority Village is an ideal place for you to learn about Qiang people’s unique culture, language, art, and religion.

Altitude of Taoping Village: around 1,300 meters

Mount Siguniang is also known as Four Girls Mountain, because there are four peaks here. The highest peak is 6,250 meters above sea level, and is the second highest peak in Sichuan Province. As a result, Mount Siguniang is also called ‘Queen of Sichuan’s Mountains’. While Shuangqiao Valley is famous for its breathtaking snow-capped peaks, glaciers and forests. We will explore this valley by taking sightseeing bus as well as hiking.

      Meals provided: breakfast, lunch, dinner

Overnight: a 3-star standard hotel at Mount Siguniang Town

      Hotel altitude: 3,100 meters

Hiking Distance: 10 to 20km, there are sightseeing buses connecting the 6 major attractions in Shuangqiao Valley and therefore today you could also freely decide exactly how much to walk.

Hike 8Km In The Middle Part Of The Mountain Before Taking Sightseeing Bus Up To Leidongping(2,300 Meters Above Sea Level)

Even though the distance is shorter, today’s hiking is a little bit more difficult than that of yesterday, not only because of the higher altitudes, but also the trails are steeper.

However, the natural scenery is much more spectacular, and you will see the changes of vegetations as you gradually walk up.

In the morning we will first walk up for about 6km to Wannian Monastery. Wannian Monastery is the oldest and largest monastery at Mount Emei, and there is a 400-year-old brick building inside, which is quite worth your visit.

Then we will walk down for about 2km to Emeishan Botanic Garden for a visit. After that we will take the sightseeing bus up to Leidongping, which is located at the higher part of the mountain. After breakfast we will start hiking up to Golden Summit, which is the top of the mountain. The hiking distance going up is about 7.5km, and the altitudes are between 2,200 to 3,000 meters above sea level. Mount Emei is one of the four most famous and sacred Buddhism mountains in China.

After reaching Golden Summit, walk around, and if the sky is clear, you might be able to see the sea of clouds and the snow-capped Mount Gongga (about 150km away), the peak of which is the highest point of Sichuan province, with an altitude of 7,556 meters above sea level. There is also a magnificent 48-meter-high Buddha statue near Golden Summit.

After the visit, take the cable car down and then walk about 1.5km to Leidongping bus station where you will take a bus to go down the mountain. The bus journey takes around 2 hours, and along the way you will see the changes of vegetation when gradually arriving at the lower areas.

When getting down to the foot of the mountain, meet the driver and then drive about 2 hours to Huanglongxi Ancient Town. Then walk about one hour to explore the ancient town.

Huanglongxi is another famous ancient town with history reaching back 1,700 years. Set beside the river, with three temples and winding alleyways it provides a particularly quintessential example of an old town and, as such, is often chosen by producers as a film location. Whilst a little more touristy than other ancient towns we visit on this trip, it is beautiful and the riverside teahouses are perfect for winding down after today’s hiking. The streets are lined with shops and local snacks, including the famous ‘one noodle noodles’: a bowl of noodles which contain a single long thick noodle pulled by vendors who put on elaborate dances, and shows, to entice customers to their restaurants.

We will check in at the hotel in Chengdu’s city area, and after some time to refresh we will hold a farewell dinner to reminisce on our journey and have a final feast on the delights of Sichuan food.
