Day 4: Acclimatization Day At Namche.

Today has been specifically set aside in order acclimatize, which is absolutely necessary before heading to the higher altitudes later on the trek. Health experts vigorously recommend staying active during this time in order to better acclimatize. We have several options open to us to aid this process. We can take a trek to Thame or visit Khunde. Another option is to use this time to explore Namche Bazaar and visit the popular weekly market that takes place on Friday evening and on Saturday morning. Your guide can also take you to the Tourist Visitor Center near to the headquarters of the Sagarmatha National Park that has a fascinating display of equipment and remnants of the first Everest climbers. You can also learn a lot about the flora and fauna of the region.

Today we follow the raging Dudh Kosi River as its glacial waters cascade down from the mountains. The trail also provides some stunning mountain views as we slowly climb higher to 3860m at Tengboche Village, well known for its decorative wall hangings and 6 meter Buddha, Tibetan musical instruments and colourful Lama robes. Taking part in the evening prayer at the monastery is a relaxing and calming end to the day.

Day 6: Trek To Dingboche (4350M) Duration 4-5 Hours.

Today we have an easy trek to Dingboche โ€“ except for the final stage where we have to climb a steep hill which reminds us that trekking at higher altitudes is more physically demanding. Initially we pass through the villages of Somare (4010m) and Orsho. Further down the trail we come to a fork and take the left trail that leads to Pheriche Village, then cross a bridge before that steep ascent to Dingboche Village (4410m) that has several good lodges for us to choose from.

  • Day 7 Day 7: Hike To Chhukung Valley And Back To Dingboche.
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 7: Hike To Chhukung Valley And Back To Dingboche.

Today we have an easy time along the trail as we head to Chhukung Valley. There are some great views of the eastern face of Ama Dablam and of the moraines towards Island Peak. The view from Chhukung and further up the valley on the moraines towards Island Peak is tremendous. This short trek is an exciting adventure. We will head back along the trail to Dingboche for the night. We also have to be prepared for strong winds when returning to Dingboche.

We then head up to Chupki Lhara that has an array stones with Tibetan prayer flags placed as a memorial to climbers Scott Fischer (American) and ten time Everest summiteer Babu Chiri Sherpa (Nepalese guide) who died while trying to  climb Mt. Everest. As we head in the direction of the Khumbu Glacier moraine several large peaks appear in front of us: Khumbutse, Lingtren, Pumori and Mahalangur Himal. This scene will leave you stunned.

  • Day 9 Day 9: Trek To Everest Base Camp (5360M.) & Back To Gorakshep Duration 6-7 Hours.
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 9: Trek To Everest Base Camp (5360M.) & Back To Gorakshep Duration 6-7 Hours.

We are slowly approaching EBC as we head to higher elevations passing Gorak Shep Lake and then further on a memorial that honors Indian mountaineers who have died on Everest.  As we head higher it becomes more physically demanding as a result of the thinner air at these higher altitudes. The trail has rocks, moraine and streams to cross before we come to EBC. The first thing we will notice on arrival at EBC is the spectacular array of colorful tents of mountaineers waiting for the right conditions before heading to the summit. From EBC we can distinctly see Nuptse, Khumbutse and Pumori and the snow glistening on their peaks. After a rest and look around EBC we head back to Gorak Shep for a good nightโ€™s sleep.

We head out in the fresh pre-dawn with temperatures around -10 to -14C as we head to Kala Patthar. There is also a possibility of strong winds that will add the chill factor. In the east are the peaks of Lingtren, Khumbutse, and Changtse. Everest also starts to appear before our eyes. Upon reaching the summit of Kala Patthar we will be overjoyed as we take in the 360-degree views and the massive and ominous Mt. Everest that appears right in front of you. This is an ideal time to have your camera ready and to take some amazing photos of Everest that will be a reminder for years after you depart Nepal. We will then descend to and stay at Dzongla for the night.

We will also visit the glaciers and turquoise lakes of the Gokyo valley while taking in the awesome views of the giant Himalayan peaks such as Everest, Cho-Oyu, Lhotse Makalu and others. We will stay the night at Gokyo.

The trek up to the peak is quite hard going, but once at the peak, you will appreciate the effort you put in to get there. The incredible views of the Gokyo valley, the Ngozumpa glacier, and a panoramic scene of the Khumbu Himalayan peak will make the tough climb worthwhile. After spending some time here we will board the helicopter and head back over the mountains to Kathmandu.
