Accommodation

We will spend the night in Hacienda El Porvenir, on the slopes of Rumiรฑahui Volcano, in a truly privileged location. Hacienda El Porvenir is the ideal spot to explore Cotopaxi Volcano and its surroundings. It is one of the best and most intense ways to get to know, first hand, the Andean way of life and to have the most thrilling adventures. The farmhouse is located in a very scenic spot, at an altitude of 3,600 meters (11,811 feet) above sea level. The scenic premises are surrounded by four volcanoes, one of which is the famous Cotopaxi volcano. El Porvenir is a working ranch that is dedicated to sustainable agriculture and cattle farming, conservation and ecotourism. We produce milk, cheese and also grow some of the vegetables offered in our restaurant. The farmhouse is made from local building materials, keeping the spirit and essence of traditional Andean construction. Faithful to its vernacular design and in line with its needs, the buildings of Hacienda El Porvenir are distributed around a large courtyard. The history of Hacienda El Porvenir goes back to colonial times. This territory, which was then known as โ€œPedregalโ€, was managed by the Jesuits. In this vast area, the Jesuits raised sheep and later dabbled on raising wild cattle. Five generations ago, in 1913, the old El Porvenir farm was bought by the Gangotena Escudero family, who have kept it up until modern times. More recently Hacienda El Porvenir has become known for its wild cattle (known as โ€œPedregal-Tambo"). Hacienda El Porvenir currently belongs to the Pรฉrez Gangotena family, who decided to open its doors to visitors in 1999 in order to share the magic and enchantment of this beautiful spot, with adventurers coming from far and wide.

    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Horseback Ride Rumiรฑahui Volcano And Cooking In The Clouds

We leave Quito early in the morning (07H00) and head to Hacienda El Porvenir, where we will be welcomed with a hot canelazo and cheese empanadas. After our welcome drink and snack, our guides will give us a brief riding lesson before we venture out on our horses. Wearing the typical dress of the chagra (ecuadorian cowboys). The ride lasts approximately 4 hours. Back in the farmhouse, a tasty local lunch will be ready on our arrival.   In the afternoon weโ€™ll have our Cooking in the Clouds lessons. The class starts with cooking lessons or our famous cheese empanadas, followed by the elaboration of aji. Aji or chile sauce is a very important part of the ecuadorian cuisine. The recipe varies from home to home. Here at Hacienda El Porvenir you will learn how to make it the traditional way, on a stone mortar and seasoned with various herbs and spices. At last we will learn how to prepare the delicious canelazo, a traditional hot drink that is served on celebrations on the Highlands of Ecuador. After the class the participants will enjoy their preparations next to a crackling fireplace.

  • Day 2 Cotopaxi National Park Visit
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Cotopaxi National Park Visit

After the hacienda Breakfast we will drive to Cotopaxi National Park (CNP). This is a very interesting drive through ancient lava flows from Cotopaxiโ€™s past eruptions.  The location is the perfect place to learn about Andean Geology. On our visit we reach the car park below the Cotopaxiโ€™s Refuge, where we begin our short hike up to the climbing hut (Refugio Josรฉ Ribas) at 4,800m. (15,744 ft).  It is hard not to be overwhelmed by the sheer immensity of the Volcano on this short hike. Once back in the vehicle, we continue on our way driving down to Limpiopungo Lake, where a box lunch will be served. If there is time, we will visit the Park Visitors Centre, which has interesting descriptions of the local flora and fauna as well as details of the various eruptions of Cotopaxi.  We will then continue, crossing rocky valleys, until we reach the Pucarรก del Salitre, an ancient Inca fortress on the way to the Amazon basin. Near this spot there are some natural springs which rise with the icy water from underground rivers that come from the glaciers of Cotopaxi. Return to Quito.
