Journey Through History And Scenic Wonders: Via Transfagarsan

Weโ€™ll begin our journey early in the morning, departing from Bucharest and heading to Curtea de Arges, the first capital of Wallachia in Romaniaโ€™s southern region. This charming city is steeped in history and shrouded in the intriguing legend of Master Manole. Here, youโ€™ll explore a significant piece of Romanian history by visiting the famous Curtea de Arges Monastery, the final resting place of Romaniaโ€™s great rulers.

Our adventure continues along the breathtaking Transfagarasan Road, a 90-kilometer (56-mile) stretch that boasts more tunnels and viaducts than any other road in Romania. In September 2009, the British television show Top Gear filmed here, with host Jeremy Clarkson declaring the Transfagarasan the best road in the world. As we ascend, youโ€™ll witness stunning waterfalls and breathtaking scenic vistas. At the highest point of the Transfagarasan, near Balea Lake, lies Romaniaโ€™s longest and highest tunnel, connecting Transylvania with Wallachia. Balea Lake, a pristine glacier lake, dazzles with its crystal-clear, icy waters.

Our final destination for the day is Sibiu, where you will stay overnight. Founded in the 12th century by Transylvanian Saxons, Sibiu was the largest and wealthiest of the seven walled citadels. The townโ€™s Old Town retains the grandeur of its past, when powerful guilds dominated regional trade. Sibiu is a city with two easily accessible levels: the Lower Town, characterized by colorful houses on cobblestone streets and surrounded by imposing city walls and defense towers, and the Upper Town, home to most of Sibiuโ€™s historic landmarks.

  • Day 2 Explore Romaniaโ€™S Gothic Marvels And Historic Fortresses: Corvin Castle And Alba Carolina
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Explore Romaniaโ€™S Gothic Marvels And Historic Fortresses: Corvin Castle And Alba Carolina

After breakfast, we will visit one of Romaniaโ€™s most renowned landmarks, often referred to as one of the countryโ€™s seven wonders: Corvin Castle, also known as Hunyadi Castle or Hunedoara Castle. This Gothic masterpiece is one of Eastern Europeโ€™s largest and most impressive fortifications.

The Corvin family, with significant influence in 15th-century Europe and ties to Vlad the Impaler, played a crucial role in defending the region against the Ottoman Empire. The castle, a striking blend of fairytale charm and Gothic grandeur, features three main areas: the Knightโ€™s Hall, the Diet Hall, and the circular stairway. The rectangular halls are adorned with marble; the Diet Hall was used for ceremonies and formal receptions, while the Knightโ€™s Hall was the site of grand feasts.

Next, we will explore the impressive Alba Carolina Fortress, a prime example of Vauban-style military architecture. This fortress is notable for its intricate architectural design, including its distinctive gates and defensive structures. Constructed between 1715 and 1738 during the reign of Emperor Charles VI, the fortress was built to protect Transylvania from Turkish invaders and to solidify Austrian control in the region.

In 1918, Alba Iulia was central to Romaniaโ€™s unification, marking the historic moment when Transylvania joined Romania. This event, celebrated annually on December 1st as Romaniaโ€™s National Day, is a cornerstone of modern Romanian history.

In the evening, we will return to Sibiu.

  • Day 3 Discover Medieval Charm: Sighisoaraโ€™S Timeless Beauty And Brasovโ€™S Historic Gems
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Discover Medieval Charm: Sighisoaraโ€™S Timeless Beauty And Brasovโ€™S Historic Gems

n the morning, weโ€™ll journey to Sighisoara, one of Europeโ€™s most picturesque and well-preserved medieval towns. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sighisoara is a perfectly intact 16th-century treasure, featuring nine towers, cobbled streets, charming burgher houses, and elaborate churches. Highlights include the Clock Tower, the birthplace of Vlad Dracula (Vlad the Impaler), the Church on the Hill with its 500-year-old frescoes, and the Dominican Monastery, renowned for its Transylvanian Renaissance altarpiece, baroque pulpit, and Oriental carpets.

Our day continues in Brasov, where youโ€™ll find Europeโ€™s narrowest street, Rope Street (Strada Sforii). Donโ€™t miss the chance to explore the Black Church (Biserica Neagra), Romaniaโ€™s largest Gothic church. Despite its ominous name, the Black Church offers a captivating experience. Youโ€™ll spend the night in the historic and vibrant city of Brasov.

Unveil The Mysteries Of Draculaโ€™S Castle And Peles Castle

After breakfast, we will journey to Bran Castle, famously known as Draculaโ€™s Castle. Originally built as a fortress and perched dramatically atop a 200-foot rock, this castle is enveloped in mystery and legend. Its imposing towers and turrets, coupled with the myth popularized by Bram Stokerโ€™s Dracula, contribute to its intriguing allure.

Our next destination is Peles Castle, an exquisite example of German Renaissance architecture and often celebrated as one of Europeโ€™s most stunning castles. Nestled in the Carpathian Mountains, Peles Castle enchants visitors with its architectural beauty and historical significance.

In the evening, we will return to Bucharest, concluding a day filled with enchanting legends and architectural marvels.
