      Bike Tour And Fileteado Porteño

Meet at 9:45 am at our partner’s office to start your cycling adventure through the southern districts of Buenos Aires. You will visit La Boca, with its famous and colorful street "Caminito", a real open-air museum, designed by Benito Quinquela Martín. Art swarms everywhere: couples dance tango in the street, and artists and musicians are everywhere.

You then leave for Puerto Madero by the river. This is a modern and dynamic zone of the city. In the middle of this concrete jungle, there is also a green oasis: it is the Ecological Reserve. You will enjoy this calm setting, together with the trees and the birds.

You will end the route at Plaza de Mayo, in the heart of the historic district. It is the founding site of our city and witness to almost all the chapters of Argentine history. You will observe the Casa Rosada, the Cabildo, among others.

Small group excursion, with English speaking guide.

      Duration: 4 hours.

      Total distance: 13.4km

Then, meet up at the corner of Bar El Federal (Bar Notable) to start the walking tour and see how the fileteado comes to life in the city, giving Buenos Aires a unique look in the world. After the first part of the walking tour to see how the fileteado porteño is present in the streets, we enter the San Telmo Market for lunch on the way.

Inside the San Telmo Market, you will find Beba Cocina: a sort of fonda, with handwritten letters, used chairs from a neighborhood club, and dishes that remind us of grandma’s home cooking.

Finally, we will take a fileteado porteño class with a master fileteador, who will teach us how to make our work, which we will take home as a souvenir, while we immerse ourselves in the history and secrets of this art.

      What is fileteado porteño?

At the end of the 19th century, in workshops and carriage factories, an art was generated that required a fast execution (to meet delivery times) and at the same time, to ornament with elegance. Trucks and buses arrived to replace horse-drawn carriages in the transportation of goods and people, but also as a support for this expression that continued to grow.

Its evolution remains adjusted to certain basic precepts: strong colors, brightness, and shadows added to volume effects, letters of complex design (often gothic), elements that are often repeated in the composition (balls, flowers, ribbons with the Argentine colors, dragons) that added to the rest of the details that generally overload the surfaces on which they are expressed, contribute to a clear identification of the works made in this style.

This overloading led to the incredible decision to ban it from public transportation in the City of Buenos Aires in 1975, justified by the supposed confusion it caused to passengers.

That prohibition not only remained without effect, but it is now the Cultural Heritage of the City of Buenos Aires since 2006, has a permanent exhibition in the Museum of the City, and even has its day: September 14. In 2015 it was declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. It was born together with Tango and also became a symbol of Argentine identity.

      Includes

      • Lunch (3 empanadas + 1 non-alcoholic beverage).
      • Guided walking tour of San Telmo neighborhood, with a Spanish-speaking guide.
      • Entrance to San Pedro Telmo Church (subject to visiting hours).

      • All materials for the class.
      • Certificate of participation.

Each participant takes home his/her own filleted work as a souvenir of the tour.

      Duration: 4 hours

2 hours of guided tour + 2 hours of class + lunch break
