  • Day 1 Visit Ganvie Village.

      The day begins with a drive to the stilt village of Ganvie, famously known as the โ€œVenice of Africa.โ€ Here, you will have the opportunity to visit the floating market and witness the unique lifestyle of the villageโ€™s inhabitants. The next stop is Ouidah, the site of Africaโ€™s largest slave market. The city is dominated by the Houeda community, who worship pythons and consider them sacred. In fact, it is forbidden to kill a python in Ouidah, and if one is found dead, it must be brought to the temple for burial. You will have the chance to visit the temple, where you may even see live pythons, which are harmless and can be photographed. After exploring the temple, you will visit the sacred forest, a spiritual place for the Houeda people, as well as the slavery market and the Door of No Return. To round out the day, there will be a Zangbeto dance performance in Lokossa in the late afternoon.

      The morning will start with a mesmerizing Guelede dance performance before heading to the northern region of Benin. Along the way, you will encounter the nomadic Fulani people and visit the Dankoli voodoo temple. The Fulani, who come from neighboring countries such as Niger, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Chad, and Guinea with their cattle, have a lifestyle that involves living in the bush with their animals.

      The morning will be spent visiting the Wom tribe in Taneka. This tribe has strict requirements for circumcision, with men required to be 25 to 30 years old and to undergo multiple ceremonies before the procedure. Taneka is a traditional village with a voodoo priest who provides protection for the community. The Wom people are known for their distinctive scarification, which serves as a symbol of their identity. After the visit, you will witness the circumcision dance. Afterwards, you will travel to Birni to meet the king of the Bariba people.

      The morning departure will take you to the regional museum of Natitingou and to several Fulani villages before arriving at Boukombe to visit the Tata Somba of the Betammaribe people. This community has specific rituals and ceremonies that young girls must undergo before reaching adulthood. You will be able to witness the Dikountri dance, which is the womenโ€™s initiation dance in the Otammaribe tribe. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to visit the women as they create pottery.

To conclude the day, you will experience the dance of menโ€™s initiation performed by the Kabye people.

The Krobo people of Ghana have a unique talent for bead making.

      Today we will explore the rich cultural heritage of Kumasi by visiting the Kumasi cultural center, which will give us insight into the history of the Ashanti people. Afterwards, we will visit Bonwire, the center of Kente weaving, where the traditional attire worn by the kings and queens of the old Ghana empire is crafted. Additionally, we will stop at Ntonsu Adinkra printing village, where we will learn about the art of creating adinkra fabric, another important textile that originated in Ghana.
