Discover The Culture In Ahu Akivi

In the afternoon, our tour delves into Easter Islandโ€™s rich history, focusing on the ancient islandersโ€™ connection with celestial and astronomical events. We explore three archaeological sites, beginning with a 20-minute trek to Ana te Pahu, a significant subway cave in the Roiho area. Once a tribal residence boasting a freshwater source and diverse flora, its name "Te Pahu," meaning "drum" in Rapanui, originates from its resonating petrified lava floor.

Continuing to Aku Akivi, we encounter a majestic site adorned with seven restored statues representing the islandโ€™s explorers. Built around the 15th century, this platform holds special astronomical significance, crucial for both daily tribal activities and spiritual ceremonies.

Our journey then takes us to the Puna Pau quarry, situated 15 kilometers northeast of Hanga Roa near Ahu Akivi. Here, within the crater of an ancient volcano, lies the raw material for crafting pukaosโ€”hat-like crowns for the moai statues.

As our tour concludes, we reflect on our immersion in the origins, traditions, and scientific understanding of a culture pulsating with vitality. Easter Island reveals itself as a captivating piece of Chilean history awaiting discovery. We return to our selected hotel enriched by the experience.
