Nevertheless, with or without its ghosts, Iโ€™m sure Kellieโ€™s Castle will always remain an integral part of our nationโ€™s colourful heritage.

Spooky Palace or Romantic Ruins? Explore Malaysiaโ€™s Most Famous Castle

Originally, the castle would have boasted a 6-storey tower, an indoor tennis court, an entertainment area on the rooftop, a wine cellar, plus what would have been Malayaโ€™s (later Malaysia) first elevator. It was designed in a Moorish and Indo-Saracenic Revival style with top quality craftsmanship in mind. To realise his dream home, Smith brought in 70 workers and imported bricks and marbles from India as well as exquisite tiles from Italy.

Visitors of the castle today can explore the interiors of the building which consists of a 4-storey tower, rooms of Smithโ€™s children, the spooky wine cellar and the elevator shaft. The rooftop is also open to visitors where they can enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding area. Selected rooms in the castle have been refurbished with furniture to show visitors what the rooms would have been like had the construction of the castle been completed.

The Tiger Head brand is a family-run business and was established in 1962. It used to include pork lard as one of the ingredients but has since stopped using that to appeal to the "halal" market. It received "halal" certification three years ago. One should not leave Ipoh without buying their local specialties.

Sekinchan, in Chinese means the โ€˜village suitable for plantationโ€™ is well known as one of the major rice supplier in Malaysia. Sekinchan is actually a fishing village. Tourists come for the fluorescent green, picturesque rice paddy fields (or sawah padi in the local language Bahasa Melayu)!

Instead for green fields:

Mango King

Mango King is simply a corner house where the front yard is turned into a small business selling not only mangoes but of fruits which was grown locally. On a small scale. There were guavas, soursops, prepared jackfruits, passion fruit, prawn crackers and mangoes. We were given a slice to try in hope that we would buy some.

Inside this unassuming shack of a shop, the main attractions are indeed the mangoes. They are big and juicy. However it was the mango shake - we call it a shake because it is just too thick to be called a juice - that got us wanting more. It's the real stuff - wholesome mango pieces blended with ice, sweet and thick, very satisfying slurping it down. Go get it!

The freshly blend mango smoothie with sour plum powder toppings was yummy and thirst quenching. They also serve rojak and snack food. The rojak was tasty.

It is believed if your wish remains on the tree on first throw, your wishes will come true.

Another newly discovered attractions at Kuala Selangor river bank, we are going to visit a fairyland where the water glows in a magical blue hue. It brings you to a 45-minute ride, out in the dark, to witness blue phosphorescence lights up the pitch black river.

The glowing blue is due to the water has a kind of microorganism called dinoflagellate in the Kuala Selangor river, which will glow in bright blue whenever it is stressed. The tour is available every night at 8pm, 9pm and 10pm. The best time to view the โ€œblue tearsโ€ is every beginning and end of a lunar month, where the tide is high and the sky is completely dark. The darker the environment, the better the view would be.
