This morning we travel by road to Kenyaโ€™s northern frontier. Wild and rugged, Samburu is fiercely beautiful with its arid savannahs watered by the lovely Uaso Nyiro River. It is also one of Kenyaโ€™s most protected areas and home to species only found north of the equator, from the reticulated giraffe to Grevyโ€™s zebras and Beisa oryxes. Lunch at Samburu Sopa Lodge, evening game driver.

Day 3: Explore Samburu Game Reserve.

Dawn breaks in golden bands as we start our day in the bush by scanning the river from our tentโ€™s veranda with a cup of steaming coffee in hand. Before the dew is off the grass, weโ€™re off in pursuit of the elephants, lions, leopards, and cheetahs that thrive in the reserveโ€™s grasslands and acacia woodlands. And so the day is spent in alternating pursuits of exploration in the bush and relaxation in our cozy camp. Lunch at the Lodge evening game drive.

  • Day 4 Day 4: Samburu โ€“ Drive To Lake Nakuru National Park.
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 4: Samburu โ€“ Drive To Lake Nakuru National Park.

Depart in the morning and drive to the floor of the Rift Valley โ€“ to Lake Nakuru National Park making a brief stop at Nyahururu Thomson Falls. Arrive at your hotel or safari lodge in time for lunch. Afternoon, conduct game drive.

Lake Nakuru is still worth a visit as it has many other notable park residents โ€“ including lion, leopard, black rhino and white rhino, Waterbuck, Reed buck, Buffalo, Baboon and many species of plains game. Nakuru has become one of the most successful sanctuaries in East Africa for rhino and now houses healthy populations of both. Similarly, the endangered Rothschildโ€™s giraffe from the Soy Plains of Eldoret was introduced in 1974 and it too has bred successfully. There are also quite a few pythons which can be spotted sometimes disconcertingly dangling from trees or crossing roads.

The bird life is spectacular with hundreds of bird species and a large variety of water birds including big numbers of pelicans which have been attracted by the increased water levels.

      Accommodation: Lake Nakuru Sopa Lodge

      Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 5 Day 5: Lake Nakuru National Park โ€“ Masai Mara Game Reserve.
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 5: Lake Nakuru National Park โ€“ Masai Mara Game Reserve.

Breakfast at the lodge then drive via the Great Rift Valley to arrive in Masai Mara in time for lunch at your Lodge or Camp. The Mara offers wildlife in such variety and abundance that it is difficult to believe; over 450 species of animals have been recorded here. You will easily see Lions, Rhinos, Hippos, Crocodiles, Giraffe, Wildebeests, Zebras, Buffalo, Warthogs, Hyenas, and Jackals, Wild dogs, Buffalo, Leopard and a variety of antelopes. It is in the Mara that the most spectacular event of the natural wonders of the world takes place. This is the annual migration of millions of wildebeest and zebra from the Serengeti (Tanzania) in search of water and pasture. Behind their heels are predators of the savanna โ€“ Lion, Cheetah, and Wild dog, Jackal, Hyena and Vultures. Depart for an afternoon game drive until dusk.

  • Day 6 Day 6: Masai Mara Game Reserve.
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 6: Masai Mara Game Reserve.

We spend two full days in the Masai Mara on morning and afternoon game drives. The trees in the distance might turn out to be a family of Giraffes. Those clump of bushes a pride of Lions, and the rock that moves a Rhino lumbering out of your way.

With diligence and some luck, you may encounter a family of Cheetahs, or a herd of Elephants crossing the path in front of you. Large animals are not the only entertainment โ€“ a family of warthogs may amuse you, running as fast as their little legs will carry them, until they forget why they are rushing and stop to regroup.
